27. Does your family rent or own your house?
Both houses belong to the family. Mahdi and Shaimaa have
been living in their house for 13 years.
29. Did you buy the house or inherit it?
To buy it we sold the house where we had been living since
we got married 40 years ago. Abed Ali's house has been in his
family for 2 generations. He inherited it when he married Alia.
30. Is it government subsidized?
No.
31. How much did it cost to buy? How did you do it?
Mahdi and Shaimaa paid 80,000 dinars for their house.
A price difficult to value in 1994, since the Iraqi dinar has
lost its value.
32. How many rooms and how many square feet is it?
Our family lives in two different houses not far from each
other, in the Amiria area, a suburb of Baghdad, 10 kilometers
from downtown.
Mahdi and Shaimaa's house is 200 square meters, it has 6
rooms, as well as the Abed Ali house, which is maybe 50
square meters less but also has 6 rooms. There is one living
room furnished with a dining table and chairs, one sofa and
4 arm chairs, some small tables; one everyday living room with
Arabic-style wooden sofas, a television, and no table. In this
room the family lives on the floor, on a carpet.
The kitchen is very simple and large at Mahdi and Shaimaa's
house, but smaller with more furniture at Abed Ali's house. In
both houses there is a deep freezer, a fridge, and a gas stove. Shaimaa likes to cook on the floor, but Alia stands.
The bathroom is very small, just big enough to take a shower,
with no mirror. Mirrors are on the wall, outside and in the
bedrooms. The bedrooms are on the first floor. Mahdi and
Shaimaa sleep on the floor but others have their own beds.
Sahar and Wasan share a room, and so do Ahmad and Hala,
Ikhlas and Falah. Little Suher sleeps with her parents. Amira
has her own room which she locks during the day.
